The right choice depends on four factors: the capacity you need, the type of solvent, the system configuration and how heat-sensitive your samples are. 1. Start with your capacity

The first question is how many samples you want to concentrate at once. Capacity is usually expressed as the number of 1.5 ml tubes the rotor holds. The compact Savant SpeedVac DNA130 processes around 36 tubes and suits smaller batches. Small and medium models such as the SPD120, SPD130 and SPD140 hold up to roughly 120 tubes. For higher throughput, choose a high-capacity model like the SPD210 or a large-capacity system such as the SPD300, which handle up to around 200 tubes of 1.5 ml. Assess realistically how many samples you run per batch, because excess capacity wastes budget while insufficient capacity slows your workflow.

2. Select based on your solvent

The type of solvent determines the chemical resistance you require. Do you mainly work with aqueous solutions, DNA or RNA? Then a dedicated model such as the Savant SpeedVac DNA130 is sufficient. If you use more aggressive organic chemistry, you need a model with higher resistance, such as the SPD130 or the large-capacity SPD300. For the most demanding applications with strong acids or bases, the SPD140 is designed to withstand these corrosive vapours as well. Choosing the wrong model leads to corrosion and a shorter service life, so always match the chemical resistance to your most aggressive solvent.

3. Integrated or modular system?

Savant SpeedVac systems come in two configurations. An integrated system, such as the SPD1030 or SPD2030, has the vacuum pump and cold trap built in. That makes it plug-and-play: you connect it and start straight away, which is ideal when space is limited or you have no existing vacuum infrastructure. A modular system, such as the SPD120, SPD130 and SPD140, works with a separate vacuum pump and a standalone vapor trap. This offers flexibility and room to expand: you choose the pump and cold trap that fit your application and add to the setup later. Pick integrated for convenience and modular for maximum flexibility.

4. Watch out for heat-sensitive samples

Do your samples contain heat-sensitive substances, such as certain biomolecules or labile compounds? Then temperature control is crucial. The refrigerated Savant SpeedVac SRF110 keeps samples cool during concentration, limiting heat-induced degradation. For routine applications without heat sensitivity a standard model is enough, but for fragile samples cooling is a sensible investment that protects the integrity of your results.
