Cryo storage racks are the rack and holder systems that let you store cryovials, canes and cryoboxes in an organised way inside cryogenic storage vessels and controlled-rate freezers. They form the internal structure of your cryogenic storage: instead of keeping samples loose in the liquid or vapour phase of the nitrogen, a rack holds every box, cane or vial in a fixed, traceable position. This makes the best use of the available space, lets you retrieve a sample quickly and limits the time a vessel stays open. Cryo storage racks fall into two groups with a different function. The choice depends on whether you want to store samples for the long term or freeze them in a controlled way.
Inventory racks: choose these for the organised, long-term storage of cryoboxes and vials in a cryogenic storage vessel. These racks hold several cryoboxes stacked in a fixed position, so you can divide the vessel systematically and find every sample again.
Freezing racks (CryoMed): choose these when you want to freeze samples in a controlled way in a controlled-rate freezer. These racks are matched to the sample format (straws, canes, cryovials or skin tissue) and hold the samples in place while the temperature drops according to a fixed programme.

Matrix 2D cryo storage rack: the Matrix 2D rack organises cryovials with a 2D barcode in a fixed grid format, so you can identify and register samples unambiguously.
CryoExtra, CryoPlus and Jumbo inventory racks: these inventory racks are matched to the corresponding Thermo Scientific storage vessels and keep cryoboxes stacked in an orderly way. You choose the rack that suits your vessel and the number of boxes you want to store.
CryoMed freezing racks: for the CryoMed controlled-rate freezers there are freezing racks per sample type, including a straw freezing rack for 0.25 and 0.5 mL straws, a cane freezing rack, a cane freezing rack for the CRF version and a two-level skin tissue freezing rack. This lets you freeze the right sample format in a controlled way.

Cryo storage racks are made of coated steel wire or stainless steel, materials that withstand the extreme cold of cryogenic storage. Stainless steel offers high corrosion resistance and is easy to clean, while a coating on steel wire provides extra protection. Both versions are suitable for use in the liquid or vapour phase of nitrogen storage. Which version fits best depends on your vessel, samples and working method.
