What are laboratory burners and sterilizers?

Laboratory burners and sterilizers are instruments used to make inoculation loops, needles and delicate micro-instruments sterile before aseptic inoculation. They are the foundation of safe microbiological work: by briefly heating the surface until red-hot, all micro-organisms are killed so you can work without cross-contamination. There are two techniques. A gas burner sterilizes with an open, regulated flame, while an electric loop sterilizer does this completely flamelessly using a heated ceramic element or focused infrared light. Gas burner or electric sterilizer: which to choose?

The choice between a gas burner and an electric loop sterilizer depends on your working environment and safety requirements. A gas burner delivers a very hot, universal flame and suits a wide range of flame applications, but works with an open flame and a gas connection. An electric sterilizer works flamelessly, needs no gas and does not disturb the airflow. That makes the electric version ideally suited for use in a flow cabinet and for anaerobic work, where open flames are not permitted.

Gas burner (open flame): choose this when you want a flexible, hot flame for annealing loops, heating glassware or sterilizing instruments at a regular workbench.

Electric sterilizer (flameless): choose this when you work in a flow cabinet or safety cabinet, work with flammable substances, or work in an environment where gas and open flames are not permitted.

Which laboratory burners and sterilizers does Poly Temp supply?

Fuego SCS gas burners: the Fuego SCS laboratory burner replaces the classic Bunsen burner with a modern, precisely regulated flame with a flame temperature up to 1350 degrees Celsius. The built-in Safety Control System continuously monitors ignition, flame and temperature and immediately shuts off the gas supply in case of danger. Available in four versions (basic, basic RF, SCS and pro), with operation via button, foot pedal or touch-free IR-sensor.

SteriMax infrared loop sterilizers: the SteriMax basic and smart sterilize flamelessly using IR-HotSpot technology. Focused infrared light sterilizes a loop in 5 to 10 seconds at 750 to 1000 degrees Celsius, ready to use immediately with no warm-up time.

SteriMax loop sterilizer (double tube): the classic SteriMax sterilizes flamelessly with a heated double tube system of ceramic and quartz glass at 900 to 950 degrees Celsius. Available in two sizes for small or larger instruments.

Flameless sterilization in the flow cabinet

In a laminar flow cabinet or biological safety cabinet an open flame is undesirable: the heat disturbs the laminar airflow and in many environments gas is not permitted. A flameless SteriMax sterilizer solves this. The device does not disturb the airflow, needs no gas connection and is safe to use thanks to its Cool-Touch housing. This keeps the sterility of your working area intact while you sterilize loops quickly and reliably.

Working safely with a gas burner

Working with an open flame calls for built-in safety. The Fuego SCS series is therefore equipped with the Safety Control System (SCS), which monitors ignition and flame and shuts off the gas supply as soon as something goes wrong. The Burner Head Control (BHC) signals clogging or an incorrectly assembled burner head, and a residual heat display warns of a still-hot burner. Automatic switch-off prevents unintended continued burning. This combines the convenience of a flame with the safety of modern monitoring.
