Medical computers and tablets for care and laboratory

An ordinary office computer does not belong next to the bed or in the laboratory. A medical panel PC does: fully sealed, antibacterial and without a fan that blows dust around. Poly Temp Scientific supplies medical computers, tablets and handhelds by Athena, designed in the Netherlands and certified for point-of-care use.

  • Medical panel PCs and all-in-one computers: flat, sealed and antibacterial for fixed workstations.
  • Rugged tablets and handhelds: for registration at the bedside and on the move.
  • Operating room wall panels: with integrated PC, surface-mounted or fully in-wall.
  • Fanless cooling and IP65: no dust spread and thoroughly disinfectable.
  • Medically certified: compliant with IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-1-2.

Which medical computers and tablets do we supply?

Our range covers the full need, from a fixed medical workstation to mobile registration in the hand.

Medical panel PCs and all-in-one computers

The flagship is the Athena Phoenix, a 23.8 inch all-in-one PC with the latest Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processors. The Phoenix Powered has hot-swappable batteries for mobile use on trolleys; the Phoenix Non-Powered is the slim version for fixed workstations. The Athena A524i is the widely usable 24 inch touchscreen PC, also available as an affordable non-IP version for office environments. For cloud and thin-client workstations (IGEL, Citrix, VMware) there is the cost-effective Athena A238J panel PC.

Tablets and handhelds for on the move

In addition to fixed computers we supply mobile devices. The Athena AMP001 is a rugged tablet with Android 14: IP65-sealed, drop-resistant and operable with gloves or wet hands. The Athena Medical PDA combines a 2D barcode scanner, RFID/NFC reader and 5G in one handheld computer for medication and care logistics. For the operating room there are the OR wall panels with integrated PC, surface-mounted or fully in-wall.

How do you recognise a medical computer?

A true medical PC differs from a consumer model on four points.

  • Housing: fully IP65 dust- and waterproof and antibacterial, so thoroughly disinfectable.
  • Fanless cooling: no fan means no spread of dust and micro-organisms.
  • Certification: IEC 60601-1 and 60601-1-2, the standards for medical electrical equipment.
  • Operation: anti-reflective glass and touchscreens that also work with gloves.

Which medical computer suits your application?

If your software runs centrally, choose the efficient A238J as a thin client. For local computing power at a fixed workstation, the Phoenix Non-Powered or A524i is the right choice. On a medical trolley the Phoenix Powered with swappable batteries belongs. And for registration on the move you choose the rugged tablet or the Medical PDA. An industrial PC application outside healthcare, for example in production or a cleanroom, also fits within this range.

Applications by sector

Medical computers and tablets are used wherever hygiene, reliability and point-of-care come together.

Hospitals and clinics: point-of-care registration in the EHR, medication administration and nursing documentation at the bedside.

Operating room: OR wall panels for image display and control in a sterile, easily cleanable environment.

Laboratory and diagnostics: operating analysis equipment and LIMS on a sealed, disinfectable workstation.

Care logistics and pharmacy: the Medical PDA for barcode scanning in medication distribution and inventory management.

Cleanroom and industry: fanless IP65 computers are also suitable outside healthcare for low-dust and humid environments.

Frequently asked questions about medical computers and tablets

What is a panel PC?

A panel PC is a computer fully integrated into the display: one flat device without a separate case. In medical form the housing is sealed and antibacterial, so the whole unit can be thoroughly disinfected.

What is the difference between an all-in-one PC and a panel PC?

Both terms describe a computer and screen in one housing. Panel PC emphasises the flat, industrial build; all-in-one PC is the broader term. The Athena models are both: flat, sealed and medically certified.

Why is fanless important in healthcare?

A fan draws in dust and micro-organisms and blows them into the room. Fanless computers such as the Athena Phoenix cool passively, stay fully sealed (IP65) and are therefore more hygienic and quieter.

What is a rugged tablet?

A rugged tablet is a robust tablet that withstands drops, moisture and disinfection. The Athena AMP001 is IP65-sealed, drop-resistant up to 1.2 metres and operable with gloves or wet hands.

Which standards does a medical computer meet?

The Athena medical computers comply with IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-1-2, the international standards for medical electrical equipment, in addition to CE, RoHS and Energy Star.

Do the touchscreens work with gloves?

Yes. The rugged tablet and Medical PDA have a special glove mode. The panel PCs are optionally available with capacitive 10-point multi-touch behind anti-reflective glass.

Can I use these computers in a virtualised environment?

Yes. All Athena computers run Windows 11, Windows 10 or IGEL. The A238J is even specifically optimised for IGEL, Citrix and VMware environments.

Can I use a medical computer on a trolley?

Yes. The Phoenix Powered with hot-swappable batteries is made for mobile use on a medical trolley. This builds a mobile workstation that lasts a full shift.
