A fixed angle rotor is the ideal rotor configuration for applications where high g-forces and fast pelleting are essential. Unlike swing-out rotors, tubes in a fixed angle rotor remain at a fixed angle, typically between 23° and 45°. As a result, samples travel a shorter distance during centrifugation, leading to significantly higher RCF values and considerably shorter centrifugation times. Therefore, fixed-angle rotors are primarily used for pelleting bacteria, cells, viruses and nucleic acids in molecular biology, microbiology, virology and bioprocessing.

At Poly Temp Scientific we offer the complete Thermo Scientific and Fiberlite range of fixed-angle rotors, perfectly matched to the Thermo Scientific X Series, S Series, C Series, BIOS A and Sorvall LYNX 4000 and 6000 superspeed centrifuges. Furthermore, all our fixed-angle rotors feature Auto-Lock rotor exchange for fast, safe rotor swap without tools. In addition, most models come with optional ClickSeal biocontainment lids, certified by Public Health England (Porton Down, UK) or TÜV NORD CERT GmbH, for safe processing of biohazardous samples such as pathogens and infectious materials.

For general purpose applications on the X4 and S4 Series we offer Fiberlite carbon fiber rotors such as the F14-6×250 LE (6 x 250 mL at 18,533 x g), the F15-6x100y (6 x 100 mL at 24,652 x g) and the F10-6×100 LEX (6 x 100 mL with integrated biocontainment). For higher speeds with 50 mL conical tubes, the F13-14x50cy (14 x 50 mL at 17,105 x g) is ideal, while the F15-8x50cy (8 x 50 mL at 24,446 x g) delivers extra g-force for molecular biology. Additionally, the F21-48×2 (48 x 2 mL at 25,055 x g) offers high throughput for microtube processing.

Frequently asked questions about fixed angle rotors

What is a fixed angle rotor?

A fixed angle rotor is a centrifuge rotor in which tubes are held at a fixed angle, typically between 23° and 45° relative to the vertical rotor axis. During centrifugation, the tubes remain in this position, causing samples to travel a shorter distance and pellet faster against the tube wall. Therefore, a fixed-angle rotor reaches significantly higher RCF values and shorter centrifugation times than a swing-out rotor. This type of rotor is ideal for pelleting bacteria, cells, viruses and nucleic acids.

When do I choose a fixed angle rotor over a swing-out rotor?

Choose a fixed-angle rotor when you need high g-forces and fast pelleting, such as bacterial culture pelleting, plasmid DNA isolation, virus precipitation or nucleic acid precipitation. Additionally, a fixed-angle rotor is more compact and reaches higher speeds at the same rotor diameter. Choose a swing-out rotor when you need sharp separation between sample layers, such as plasma separation from blood samples, gradient centrifugation or processing microplates and blood bags.

Which fixed angle rotor fits my Thermo Scientific centrifuge?

Each Thermo Scientific centrifuge has specific compatible fixed-angle rotors. Fiberlite carbon fiber rotors such as the F14-6×250 LE, F15-6x100y and F13-14x50cy fit the X4 and S4 Series, while the HIGHConic III and MicroClick rotors fit the C Series. For the Sorvall LYNX 4000 and 6000 superspeed centrifuges, the Fiberlite LEX rotors (F9, F10, F12, F14, F20, F21, F23) are suitable. Microcentrifuge rotors for the MicroCL 17/21 and M Series are not interchangeable with larger platforms.

What are Fiberlite carbon fiber rotors?

Fiberlite is the carbon fiber rotor brand of Thermo Scientific. Carbon fiber rotors are up to 60% lighter than aluminum rotors, have excellent chemical resistance to aggressive reagents, and reach higher RCF values due to their low mass and excellent strength-to-weight ratio. In addition, Fiberlite rotors have a longer service life because they do not corrode, even when used with acids, bases or organic solvents. Models such as the F14-6×250 LE and F21-48×2 are popular for both general purpose and superspeed applications.

What is the maximum RCF a fixed angle rotor can reach?

The maximum RCF of a fixed-angle rotor depends on the rotor and the centrifuge. On general purpose centrifuges such as the X4 and S4 Series, Fiberlite rotors reach up to 25,314 x g (Microliter 48×2). On the C Series compact centrifuges, the MicroClick 24×2 rotor delivers a maximum of 30,279 x g. For superspeed applications on the Sorvall LYNX 6000, the T29-8×50 titanium rotor reaches 100,605 x g, and the Fiberlite F23-48×1.5 delivers 57,368 x g. Microcentrifuge rotors on the MicroCL 21R reach 21,100 x g.

Which fixed angle rotor is suitable for PCR and molecular biology?

For PCR sample prep and molecular biology we offer specialised fixed-angle rotors with biocontainment lids. The MicroClick 24×2 rotor (30,279 x g on C Series) is ideal for spin columns with open caps and high-volume nucleic acid isolation. The Microliter 48×2 rotor processes 48 tubes per run, while the PCR 8×8 strip rotor is specifically designed for PCR strips. Additionally, the MicroClick 18×5 rotor offers capacity for 5 mL microtubes at 24,652 x g, ideal for medium-volume nucleic acid samples.
