A swinging bucket rotor is the most versatile rotor configuration for laboratory centrifuges. During centrifugation, the buckets swing from a vertical resting position to a fully horizontal position, allowing samples to separate perpendicular to the rotor axis. As a result, sharp and clearly visible layers form, which are ideal for applications such as plasma separation, sedimentation, gradient centrifugation and blood bank processing. Therefore, swing-out rotors are widely used in clinical laboratories, blood banks, pharmaceutical production and cell culture facilities.

At Poly Temp Scientific we offer the complete Thermo Scientific range of swinging bucket rotors, perfectly matched to the Thermo Scientific X Series, S Series, C Series, BIOS 16 and Cryofuge centrifuges. Furthermore, all our swing-out rotors feature Auto-Lock rotor exchange, allowing you to switch rotors in just three seconds without tools. In addition, most models come with optional ClickSeal biocontainment lids, certified by Public Health England (Porton Down, UK) or TÜV NORD CERT, for safe processing of biohazardous samples.

For the Thermo Scientific X4 and S4 Series we offer high-capacity swinging bucket rotors such as the TX-1000 (4 x 1000 mL at 4,122 x g), the TX-750 (4 x 750 mL at 4,816 x g) and the BIOShield 1000A (4 x 250 mL at 7,164 x g with integrated biocontainment). Additionally, for 4L applications there is the H-Flex HS4 for 16 x 50 mL conical tubes, ideal for clinical sample processing with high throughput. These rotors accommodate tubes from 1.5 mL microtubes up to 1000 mL bio-bottles, plus microplates, blood bags and cell culture flasks via more than 30 available adapters per rotor.

For the more compact X1 and S1 Series we supply the TX-400 (4 x 400 mL), TX-200 (4 x 180 mL), BIOShield 720 and the modular H-Flex 1 with interchangeable buckets. These rotors are ideal for laboratories with limited bench space that still need to process large tubes and bottles. Moreover, the M-20 microplate rotor is available for parallel plate processing on both X1, S1 and X4, S4 models.

For the Thermo Scientific C Series compact centrifuges we offer the TX-150 swinging bucket rotor (4 x 145 mL at 3,260 x g), the TX-100 and TX-100S clinical rotors for routine blood sample processing, the MT-12 for 12 microtubes per run at 16,438 x g, and the M10 microplate rotor for 4 standard microplates or 2 deep-well plates. These rotors combine a compact design with Auto-Lock exchange for flexibility in clinical and molecular biology laboratories.

For blood bank processing with the Cryofuge 8 and 16 we supply the HAEMAFlex rotor series in four configurations: HAEMAFlex 6 (6 x 550 mL), HAEMAFlex 8 (8 x 550 mL), HAEMAFlex 12 (12 x 550 mL) and HAEMAFlex 16 (16 x 550 mL). Additionally, for the BIOS 16 bioprocessing centrifuge we offer the complete SW rotor series with 6 or 8 buckets of 1000 mL or 2000 mL, suitable for fetal bovine serum processing, cell culture scale-up and bioprocess containers.

Frequently asked questions about swinging bucket rotors

What is a swinging bucket rotor?

A swinging bucket rotor (also called a swing-out rotor) is a centrifuge rotor with buckets that swing to a horizontal position during centrifugation. As a result, samples separate perpendicular to the rotor axis, creating sharp and clearly visible layers. Therefore, this type of rotor is ideal for plasma separation, sedimentation, gradient centrifugation and blood bank processing. Swinging bucket rotors typically reach lower RCF values than fixed-angle rotors, but offer better separation quality and visible layers for further sample processing.

When do I choose a swinging bucket rotor over a fixed-angle rotor?

Choose a swinging bucket rotor when you need sharp separation between sample layers, such as plasma and serum separation from blood samples, density gradient centrifugation (Percoll, Ficoll) or processing microplates and blood bags. Furthermore, a swing-out rotor offers more flexibility in terms of adapters and tube formats. Choose a fixed-angle rotor when you need high RCF values and fast pelleting, for example for bacterial, cell or nucleic acid pelleting.

Which swinging bucket rotor fits my Thermo Scientific centrifuge?

Each Thermo Scientific centrifuge has specific compatible swing-out rotors. The TX-1000, TX-750 and BIOShield 1000A fit the X4 and S4 Series, while the TX-400, TX-200 and BIOShield 720 fit the X1 and S1 Series. For the C Series, the TX-150, TX-100/100S, MT-12 and M10 are suitable. Blood bank rotors such as the HAEMAFlex 6/8/12/16 are specifically for the Cryofuge 8 and 16, while the BIOS 16 SW rotors are developed for the BIOS 16 bioprocessing centrifuge.

What is the difference between round and rectangular buckets?

Round buckets are designed for large round bottles such as 750 mL bio-bottles, 500 mL conical bottles and 250 mL Nalgene bottles. Therefore, round buckets are often used for cell culture and bioprocessing. Rectangular buckets accommodate flat-bottom bottles, microplates and a wider range of smaller tubes such as 50 mL conical tubes, 15 mL conical tubes and 1.5/2 mL microtubes. For some rotors such as the TX-750, you can use both bucket types on the same rotor cross for maximum flexibility.

Can I centrifuge microplates in a swinging bucket rotor?

Yes, many swing-out rotors accept dedicated microplate carriers. The TX-1000 processes up to 24 microplates per run via 4 carriers of 6 standard microplates each. The TX-750 offers 16 microplates per run and the M10 (C Series) processes 4 standard microplates or 2 deep-well plates. Additionally, the specialised HIGHPlate 6000 is available for laboratories with high plate volumes, with a capacity of up to 10 microplates per run on the X4 Series.

Which swinging bucket rotor is suitable for blood bags?

For centrifuging blood bags we offer the HAEMAFlex series from Thermo Scientific, specifically developed for the Cryofuge 8 and 16 blood bank centrifuges. The HAEMAFlex 6 and 8 process 6 and 8 blood bags of 550 mL respectively, ideal for regular to medium volume blood bank work. For high-throughput blood banks, the HAEMAFlex 12 and 16 offer capacity for 12 or 16 blood bags per run, with various adapters for different blood bag sizes (M, XL, XXL and cord blood separation).
