Description

The Thermo Scientific Cryofuge 8 and 16 blood banking centrifuge is designed for blood banks and blood processing centers that need to separate large volumes reliably and sustainably. This floor-standing system combines high processing capacity with the new GreenCool cooling technology on a natural refrigerant. As a result, the centrifuge delivers consistent performance at lower energy use. Moreover, the unit is built in a certified zero-waste facility in Osterode am Harz, Germany, fully on renewable energy. Poly Temp supplies the Cryofuge as a Thermo Scientific dealer with its own test center and a buy or rent model.

High capacity for high-throughput processing

The Cryofuge is available in two models, so you can match capacity to your workflow. The Cryofuge 8 processes up to 6 x 550 mL blood bags and is upgradeable to 8 x 550 mL with the same bucket system. As such, this model suits regular to medium throughput well. The Cryofuge 16 targets high throughput and processes up to 12 x 550 mL, upgradeable to 16 x 550 mL with the same bucket choice. Both models work with four HAEMAFlex rotors, so you can scale up easily as your volume grows. Beyond blood bags, the system also supports tubes and microplates through a range of adapters, depending on your application.

GreenCool cooling technology for lower environmental impact

The Cryofuge is equipped with a cooling system on carbon dioxide (CO2), a natural refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential of only 1. This refrigerant does not deplete the ozone layer and complies with EU and US EPA F-gas regulations. In addition, the system uses up to 14% less energy than the previous model, measured over a one-hour run at maximum speed. Furthermore, thanks to the GreenCool system the centrifuge is 60 kg lighter than earlier models, which simplifies transport and installation. The noise level is also 4 dB(A) lower, which noticeably improves comfort in the laboratory.

HAEMAFlex Eco-Spin rotors save energy

The HAEMAFlex rotors with Eco-Spin technology feature a windshield. As a result, they save up to 64% energy compared to non-windshielded rotors. The HAEMAFlex 6 and 8 belong to the Cryofuge 8, with a maximum speed of 5,000 and 4,600 rpm respectively. The HAEMAFlex 12 and 16 belong to the Cryofuge 16, with a maximum speed of 4,700 and 3,900 rpm. The Auto-Lid function stores the rotor lid on the centrifuge door and opens and closes it automatically. On closing, the windshield lid is restacked seamlessly, which makes operation faster and safer.

Reproducible results with the ACE function

The Accumulated Centrifugal Effect (ACE) function ensures reproducible separation. The technology automatically adjusts run time to compensate for variations in acceleration caused by a full or partial rotor load. The system calculates the g-force during the run in increments of speed over time and provides a value for the overall separating g-force. This value replaces the time setting, so every run reaches the same overall g-force. Additionally, the DuraFlex drive technology neutralizes an imbalance of up to 125 g without interrupting a run. Auto-ID also identifies the rotor instantly on placement and sets the parameters automatically, which rules out the risk of over-speeding.

Control, data management and compliance

The Centri-Touch interface is a bright, glove-friendly touchscreen that lets you set up a run quickly. You recall up to 120 programs with alphanumeric naming, while the Centri-Cross function imports protocols from another Thermo Scientific large-capacity unit. For traceability, the built-in Centri-Track logs the user, the run conditions and any error messages. The Centri-Vue application also provides a real-time connection through a smartphone or computer, with which you monitor up to 100 centrifuges at once. The system supports full GMP and GLP traceability with electronic signatures and password protection. Finally, the Cryofuge meets ISO 13485 and the Medical Device Regulation (EU) 2017/745, and the unit is UL listed, CE marked and FDA listed.

Ergonomics and installation

The Cryofuge offers an optimal working height of 930 mm for effortless loading and unloading. With the Auto-Door function, the door opens and closes completely at the push of a button, without manual force. This is especially convenient in production environments where this action is repeated up to 30 times a day. The unit stands on castors and adjustable, robust feet, so relocating within the laboratory stays easy. As a result, the centrifuge does not need to be bolted to the floor, which simplifies installation. Need advice on the right configuration? View our range or get in touch via our contact page.

What is the difference between the Cryofuge 8 and the Cryofuge 16?

The Cryofuge 8 is intended for regular to medium throughput and processes up to 8 x 550 mL blood bags. The Cryofuge 16 targets high throughput and reaches up to 16 x 550 mL. Both models share the same bucket system, so expansion stays straightforward.

How does GreenCool technology work?

GreenCool uses carbon dioxide (CO2) as a natural refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential of 1. This refrigerant does not deplete the ozone layer and complies with EU and US EPA F-gas regulations. As a result, the system uses less energy and produces less heat.

Which rotors does the Cryofuge blood banking centrifuge use?

The Cryofuge works with four HAEMAFlex rotors with Eco-Spin technology: the HAEMAFlex 6 and 8 for the Cryofuge 8, and the HAEMAFlex 12 and 16 for the Cryofuge 16. These windshielded rotors save up to 64% energy compared to non-windshielded rotors.

What does the ACE function do?

The Accumulated Centrifugal Effect function automatically adjusts run time based on the rotor load. This way, every run reaches the same overall g-force, whether the rotor is fully or partially loaded. That delivers reproducible results.

Is the Cryofuge suitable for a GMP environment?

Yes. The centrifuge offers built-in Centri-Track run logging, user management with password protection and electronic signatures for runs. This supports GMP and GLP traceability and meets ISO 13485 and the Medical Device Regulation.

Can I monitor the Cryofuge remotely?

Yes. The Centri-Vue application provides a real-time connection to the centrifuge through a smartphone or computer. You track the status, performance and maintenance needs of one or several centrifuges at once, and receive alerts and diagnostic information.
