In traditional cryogenic freezers, a layer of liquid nitrogen sits at the bottom of the chamber. Samples stored in that liquid can shrink. As a result, nitrogen may leak into the vials. On warming, that nitrogen then expands. Therefore the vial can rupture. That is why the V-Series places the liquid nitrogen in a jacket instead.

As a result, the storage area itself stays completely dry. Meanwhile, the jacket provides an even temperature throughout the chamber. In addition, no space is lost to nitrogen at the bottom. So the full volume remains available for samples.

Once samples fill the chamber, thermal mass increases. So temperature uniformity stabilises even further. As a result, all samples stay well below 132 degrees Celsius below zero. At that point, all metabolic activity stops.
