The Thermo Scientific Lindberg Blue M LGO box furnace is the most advanced box furnace in the Lindberg Blue M line. As a result, this model combines patented LGO heating elements, Moldatherm ceramic fiber insulation, and a Platinel II thermocouple for stable operation up to 1200 °C. Specifically, uniformity is ± 2.0 °C at 1100 °C, with variable heatup rate preventing thermal shock to materials. Furthermore, self-tuning PID control provides optimal thermal processes without temperature overshoot.
The most distinctive feature of this furnace is the LGO heating element (Light Gauge Overbend). Specifically, this patented design delivers exceptional energy release, fast heatup and recovery, plus reduced thermal process cycle time. As a result, you save time and energy at high sample throughput. Furthermore, the LGO element combines with Moldatherm insulation for efficient heat transfer to the chamber.
Specifically, you choose from two capacities, each with its own door design:
Moreover, both models require hardwiring by a qualified technician, because the high power level does not allow a standard plug.
Specifically, you choose from three PID microprocessor controllers, all with adjustable high-limit OTP:
Furthermore, each controller choice offers optional RS-485 communications (suffix COMC-1) for remote monitoring and data logging from a PC.
Moreover, OTC (over-temperature control) is optionally available on models with “B” in the suffix. Specifically, OTC works with an independent thermocouple and secondary controller that override the main controller and shut off power when the high limit is reached. As a result, OTC provides an extra backup safety layer on top of standard OTP. In addition, OTC requires manual reset, which prevents unintended restart after an over-temperature event.
Specifically, a flowmeter is optionally available on models with “FM” in the suffix. Notably, this built-in gas flowmeter delivers adjustable flow from 28 to 283 liter per hour (1.0 to 10.0 cu. ft./hr), controlled via the front panel. As a result, control of inert gas or air supply to the chamber becomes possible, suited for air exchange in ashing applications. Furthermore, there is an important limitation: the flowmeter is not suitable for combustible or volatile gases, and the door is not fully gas-tight.
Specifically, this LGO box furnace is used for demanding thermal processes up to 1200 °C, including:
In addition, this model is regularly used in pharmaceutical development, biotechnology, and advanced materials research where both high temperatures and precise process control are required.
Moreover, this box furnace features multiple safety layers. Specifically, the door switch interrupts power to the heating element when the door opens. Furthermore, self-tuning PID control prevents temperature overshoot during heatup. Notably, adjustable high-limit OTP provides a standard protection layer, with optional OTC as an additional backup. In addition, the LED display shows actual temperature versus setpoint in either °C or °F. Specifically, the unit features an air vent on top (2.54 cm diameter) and an air inlet at the rear (0.95 cm diameter) for inert atmosphere exchange.
Each LGO box furnace ships with a Platinel II thermocouple for long-term stability, a Moldatherm hearth plate for spillage protection, and a two-part shelf (one shelf position for 16.4 L, three shelf positions for 55.3 L). As a result, the unit is immediately ready for applications up to 1200 °C without additional investment. Furthermore, several options are available: OTC over-temperature control, built-in flowmeter, and RS-485 communications port for remote monitoring.
Note: all models require hardwiring by a qualified technician. Specifically, no plug or power cord is supplied, because the power ranging from 4500 W (16.4 L) to 5800 W (55.3 L) demands a fixed electrical connection.

The Thermo Scientific Lindberg Blue M LGO box furnace combines patented LGO heating elements with Moldatherm insulation for applications up to 1200 °C. Specifically, you choose between two capacities of 16.4 or 55.3 liter, with a vertical-lift or horizontal side-swing door respectively. Furthermore, three controller choices (from 8 to 500 segments) provide flexibility for any thermal process, with optional OTC over-temperature control and RS-485 communications. In addition, a flowmeter option is available for inert gas or air flow control up to 283 liter per hour.

LGO stands for Light Gauge Overbend, a patented heating element that Thermo Scientific uses in many Lindberg Blue M box and tube furnaces. Specifically, this design delivers exceptional energy release, fast heatup and recovery, plus reduced thermal process cycle time. As a result, you save both time and energy at high sample throughput. Furthermore, LGO combines with Moldatherm insulation for efficient heat transfer to the chamber.
OTP (over-temperature protection) is standard on all models and uses the alarm contacts of the main controller to open the safety relay and stop heating when the high limit is exceeded. By contrast, OTC (over-temperature control) adds a second independent thermocouple and secondary controller. As a result, OTC provides a backup for the main controller, even when it fails itself. Moreover, OTC requires manual reset, which prevents unintended restart.
Specifically, the choice depends on your sample volume. The 16.4 liter (BF51731 / BF51732 series) provides sufficient room for laboratory applications with mid-sized samples, and has a vertical-lift door that saves work space. By contrast, the 55.3 liter (BF51841 / BF51842 series) offers three shelf positions and a horizontal side-swing door for full chamber access. Furthermore, 55.3 liter is a better fit for pilot plants and production environments processing large batches.
Specifically, the choice depends on your process complexity. For applications with one structured profile, the single program controller (8 segments) suffices. By contrast, the 5-program controller offers 16 segments per program, ideal when you want to store different processes and switch between them quickly. Furthermore, the 25-program controller with 500 segments is the choice for research with complex profiles, repeating cycles, or advanced data logging.
The built-in flowmeter provides adjustable gas supply from 28 to 283 liter per hour (1.0 to 10.0 cu. ft./hr) to the chamber. Specifically, this option is used for fresh air exchange in ashing applications, or for inert gas supply in materials research. Notably, it is important to know that the flowmeter is not suitable for combustible or volatile gases, and that some leakage will occur because the door is not fully gas-tight.
