UVS450A universal vacuum system with VaporNet for SpeedVac

The UVS450A is an integrated universal vacuum system from Thermo Scientific that combines an oil-free vacuum pump and a refrigerated cold trap in a single compact unit. Firstly, the cold trap cools to -50°C, which efficiently captures solvent vapors and protects your vacuum pump from vapor contamination. Secondly, the ETFE diaphragm pump delivers a displacement of 36 liters per minute at 60 Hz or 30 liters per minute at 50 Hz. Moreover, the unit features the patented VaporNet technology for improved solvent recovery.

VaporNet technology for enhanced solvent recovery

Firstly, VaporNet consists of a valve in the vacuum line plus a control circuit that operates that valve. In addition, the valve modulates the vacuum flow, which causes solvent molecules to remain in the cold trap longer than would be possible with a constant vacuum. Furthermore, this results in significantly higher recovery rates for volatile solvents. As a result, you activate VaporNet via a switch when processing volatile, low-boiling solvents.

Oil-free and corrosion-resistant design

Firstly, the UVS450A operates with an oil-free ETFE diaphragm pump that requires no oil changes. Secondly, the oil-free design prevents aggressive solvent vapors from degrading pump oil, as occurs with traditional rotary vane vacuum pumps. Moreover, the system is corrosion-resistant for a long service life. As a result, you save significantly on maintenance costs and pump oil compared with oil-sealed alternatives.

Easy solvent recovery with wide-mouth glass flask

Firstly, the UVS450A features a glass condensation flask with a wide mouth for easy handling during emptying and cleaning. In addition, the self-sealing cover hermetically seals the system for optimal vacuum. Furthermore, you swap the flask in just a few minutes without switching off the unit. As a result, we recommend keeping a second glass condensation flask on hand so you can continue working uninterrupted during cleaning and drying.

Expandable with chemical traps

Firstly, you optionally add the ANT100 post-trap to neutralize ammonia or acid vapors before they reach the laboratory environment. Secondly, the DTK120R chemical trap offers absorption of volatile radioactivity and residual vapors, which is ideal for specific applications in nuclear research. Moreover, you choose the more advanced UVS850DDA when you require an integrated ANT100, PTFE coating and stronger vacuum (<0.6 torr) as standard.

Combining with SpeedVac concentrators

Firstly, the UVS450A is designed as the integrated vacuum system in a modular SpeedVac setup. Secondly, the unit is the standard vacuum source in our SpeedVac P2 kits, including the SRF110 and SPD120 P2 kit. In addition, you combine the UVS450A with other vacuum-dependent equipment such as vacuum ovens, gel drying systems or rotary evaporators. As a result, the integrated design saves benchtop space compared with separate cold trap and pump setups.

What is the difference between the UVS450A and the UVS850DDA?

Firstly, both systems feature a -50°C cold trap, VaporNet technology and an oil-free pump. Secondly, the UVS850DDA offers a three-stage high-efficiency pump with a significantly stronger maximum vacuum of <0.6 torr, compared with <10 torr for the UVS450A. Moreover, the UVS850DDA includes the ANT100 post-trap, PTFE-coated tubing and a PTFE vapor path as standard for processing aggressive solvents such as methylene chloride and trifluoroacetic acid. As a result, choose the UVS450A for standard SpeedVac applications and the UVS850DDA for aggressive solvents and combinatorial chemistry.

Do I need any additional accessories to use the UVS450A?

Yes, you must order CryoCool heat transfer fluid separately (SCC1 for 1 liter or SCC5 for 5 liter). Firstly, you fill the stainless steel chamber once with CryoCool as the heat transfer medium between the chamber and the glass flask. In addition, CryoCool is non-toxic, non-flammable, odorless and long-lasting. Moreover, you optionally add an ANT100 post-trap for neutralization of ammonia or acids, or a DTK120R for absorption of volatile radioactivity.

How long does it take for the UVS450A to reach operating temperature?

It is recommended to switch on the UVS450A 20 to 30 minutes before use, so the cold trap reaches its operating temperature of approximately -50°C. Firstly, the unit operates continuously, which means it is best to leave the system on throughout the working day. In addition, you swap the glass condensation flask in just a few minutes without switching off the unit. Moreover, VaporNet only operates optimally once the cold trap has fully reached temperature.
