Description

Laboratory muffle furnace 1200 °C with 5.8 liter chamber and four controllers

The Thermo Scientific Thermolyne benchtop muffle furnace is designed for laboratories performing thermal treatment up to 1200 °C on mid-sized sample volumes. Specifically, this model combines a 5.8 liter working chamber with stability of ± 0.2 °C and uniformity of ± 3.6 °C at 1000 °C. Furthermore, this is the only Thermolyne benchtop model with a choice of four PID controllers, allowing you to match the unit precisely to the complexity of your process. In addition, thermal-efficient ceramic insulation keeps energy consumption low, while two open coil heating elements on the chamber sides deliver fast heatup.

Four controller choices for your process

Specifically, you choose from four PID microprocessor controllers depending on what your process requires:

  • F48010-33 (A1): Digital single setpoint control with dual display. Suited for isothermal processes at one fixed temperature. No mechanical OTP relay.
  • F48020-33 (B1): Single setpoint with ramp to setpoint and dwell function. Moreover, this model includes a mechanical OTP relay for over-temperature protection.
  • F48020-33-80 (C1): Programmable with 1 stored program of 8 segments, including OTP relay. As a result, more complex thermal profiles with multiple steps become possible.
  • F48050-33 (D1): Programmable with 5 stored programs of 16 segments each, plus RS-232 communications and OTP relay. In addition, suited for remote monitoring and data logging from a PC.

Notably, all four variants feature a dual display that simultaneously shows actual temperature and setpoint, in either °C or °F.

Applications in laboratory and industry

Specifically, this laboratory muffle furnace is used for a wide range of thermal processes up to 1200 °C, such as:

  • Ashing of organic samples for gravimetric analysis
  • Determination of volatile and suspended solids
  • Sintering and bonding processes for ceramics and metal
  • Heat treatment, annealing, and tempering
  • Pyrolysis and calibration
  • Thermal expansion and viscosity testing

Furthermore, this model is used in pharmaceutical development, materials research, and the food industry for combustion analysis of additives and residues.

Safety and operation

Moreover, this muffle furnace features multiple safety layers. Specifically, the door switch interrupts power to the heating elements when the door opens. Furthermore, thermocouple break protection cuts heating when a sensor fails, which prevents uncontrolled temperature rise. In addition, the built-in vent port removes fumes and moisture directly, extending the life of the heating elements and the unit. Notably, a 0.8 cm diameter port at the rear of the chamber allows independent temperature measurement.

Standard accessories and optional extensions

Each benchtop muffle furnace ships with a Type K thermocouple, power cord with CEE 7/7 plug, hearth tray (PH480X1), and ceramic shelf (SH480X1). As a result, the ceramic shelf doubles load capacity by allowing two sample levels. Furthermore, the hearth tray protects the chamber bottom from damage caused by spilled materials. In addition, an optional stainless steel exhaust kit (AY408X1A, 2.5 inch ID, 5 ft length) is available for connection to an exhaust system.

What is a muffle furnace and what is it used for?

A muffle furnace is a laboratory furnace that heats samples to high temperatures inside an insulated combustion chamber. Specifically, the sample stays isolated from any direct flame or heating source, enabling clean thermal treatment. Furthermore, this type of furnace is used for ashing, sintering, gravimetric analysis, heat treatment, and pyrolysis at temperatures up to 1200 °C.

Which of the four controllers should I choose?

Specifically, the choice depends on the complexity of your process. For isothermal processes at one fixed temperature, the F48010-33 (A1) suffices. By contrast, the F48020-33 (B1) provides a controlled heatup curve with a hold period, ideal when ramping is required. Moreover, the F48020-33-80 (C1) delivers a programmable profile of 8 segments for applications with multiple temperature steps. In addition, the F48050-33 (D1) is the choice when you want to store 5 programs or log data via RS-232 communications.

What is the difference between this muffle furnace and the smaller Thermolyne benchtop models?

The small Thermolyne benchtop muffle furnace offers 1.3 or 2.1 liter and reaches 1100 °C with only single setpoint control. By contrast, this laboratory muffle furnace offers 5.8 liter and 1200 °C, with a choice of four controllers. Moreover, uniformity is better (± 3.6 °C versus ± 5.0 to ± 7.8 °C at 1000 °C). As a result, this model fits applications that require higher temperatures, larger samples, or more complex temperature profiles.

What is the difference between a muffle furnace and a drying oven?

A muffle furnace operates up to 1200 °C and is used for ashing, sintering, and thermal conversion of samples. By contrast, a drying oven works up to approximately 250 or 300 °C, for drying glassware, samples, or materials. As a result, a muffle furnace is required when organic substances must combust fully or when materials undergo thermal transformation, while a drying oven suffices for routine drying and curing.

Which accessories are included?

Each benchtop muffle furnace ships with a Type K thermocouple, power cord with CEE 7/7 plug, hearth tray (PH480X1), and ceramic shelf (SH480X1). Specifically, the ceramic shelf doubles load capacity by allowing two sample levels. In addition, an optional stainless steel exhaust kit (AY408X1A, 2.5 inch ID, 5 ft length) is available for connection to an exhaust system.
