X2 and X4: match the centrifuge to your workflow

The Thermo Scientific X Series combines compact X2 benchtop centrifuges up to 1.6 litres with X4 models up to 4 litres. Choose touchscreen control and extensive programming, with or without refrigeration. New X2T and X2TR models are available as IVD-MD or General Use Only; prices on request.

For research, cell culture and sample processing, capability depends on more than the instrument. Rotor, buckets, adapters and labware must match the volume, required RCF and protocol. Clinical applications require the appropriately approved IVD-MD instrument and accessories; General Use Only does not replace that approval.

Compact X2T and refrigerated X2TR

X2 models process up to 4 × 400 mL with the TX-400 swinging-bucket rotor. X2T is ventilated; X2TR has GreenCool refrigeration using a natural refrigerant and a −20 to +40 °C setpoint range. Achievable sample temperature depends on rotor, speed, load and ambient conditions.

With the Microliter 30 × 2 rotor, both models reach 25,830 × g at 15,200 rpm. This is not the performance at the maximum 1.6-litre capacity. Maximum swinging-bucket performance is 7,188 × g at 6,300 rpm with BIOShield 720.

Touchscreen and protocol management

The full-colour touchscreen supports up to 100 run programmes with step programming. Set speed in 1 rpm or 1 × g increments, with a timer up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds. User-management and traceability features support your workflow but do not automatically establish process compliance. Auto-Lock supports tool-free rotor exchange. SMARTSpin monitors imbalance; correct loading and operation according to the manual remain necessary.

When should you choose a X4 model?

The X4 series offers up to 4 × 1,000 mL with TX-1000 for higher throughput. X4T is a ventilated benchtop model, X4TR a refrigerated benchtop model and X4FR a refrigerated floor model. Existing X4 versions remain available in the selector. Not all rotors are interchangeable between X2 and X4.

Rotors for X2T / X2TR

The 17 rotors above are listed for X2 in the June 2026 Thermo brochure. A rotor’s maximum performance can differ between centrifuge models. Use only approved combinations and observe the lowest applicable operating limit. Biocontainment requires the correct certified lids and buckets, which are not included with every rotor item.

Configuration and quotation

The eight new S2/X2 catalogue numbers are base instruments: select the rotor separately. Poly Temp can configure a complete system for cell culture, blood tubes, microtubes or microplates.
