Ergonomic workspace for the laboratory

Healthy working starts with the right workplace setup

Laboratory staff, nurses, analysts and medical specialists spend a large part of their working day seated or standing, often in a forward-leaning posture at a workbench, microscope or patient bedside. Prolonged sitting in a poor posture is one of the most common causes of back, neck and shoulder complaints in the workplace, yet this is almost entirely preventable with the right seating and workspace setup.

Poly Temp Scientific supplies ergonomic seating from Score for active sitting at workbenches and desks, Ergotron for mobile workspace solutions and monitor arms, and Athena for medical input devices meeting IP68 hygiene standards. All products are available in configurations suited for standard laboratories, cleanrooms and ESD-safe environments.

For information about occupational health regulations for ergonomic workplace setup, contact our advisers for a no-obligation consultation or an on-site trial placement.

Saddle stools

Score saddle stools for active and ergonomic sitting

A saddle stool is not an ordinary stool. The saddle shape tilts the pelvis 15 to 20 degrees forward, allowing the spine to maintain its natural S-curve: lumbar lordosis in the lower back, thoracic kyphosis in the mid back, cervical lordosis in the neck. This is precisely the posture that places the least demand on the back muscles. On a standard chair with a 90-degree angle between trunk and legs, this posture cannot be sustained: the pelvis tilts backwards, the lumbar spine collapses and pressure on the intervertebral discs increases unevenly.

Score offers saddle stools in two seat widths: the Amazone (narrow seat, legs slightly closer together) and the Jumper (wider seat, legs slightly further apart). Both are available in four configurations and in a seamlessly upholstered version for cleanrooms and medical environments.

Amazone or Jumper: which seat width suits you?

The Amazone has a narrower seat, keeping the legs closer together: the preference of many women and smaller users who experience more stability on a narrow seat. The Jumper has a wider seat, with the legs slightly further apart: preferred by users who find a broader base more balanced. Both seat shapes provide the same open hip angle and the same ergonomic benefit. The difference is purely the width and the resulting leg position. An on-site trial placement with your Score adviser is the most reliable way to determine which variant fits best.

Four insights for ergonomic working in the laboratory

Back complaints are the most commonly reported occupational condition in laboratory and healthcare environments. They rarely arise suddenly, but build up over months and years of poor posture, unfavourable working heights and insufficient variation between standing, sitting and moving. Investment in the right ergonomic setup pays for itself through reduced absenteeism, higher productivity and longer sustainable employability.

Poly Temp Scientific always advises based on the specific tasks, the working height and the environment. An on-site trial placement is the most reliable way to determine which seating solution fits best.

The open hip angle: why a saddle stool works

On a standard chair with a 90-degree knee angle, the pelvis tilts backwards and the lumbar lordosis flattens: the intervertebral discs are compressed at the back. On a saddle stool, the pelvis tilts 15 to 20 degrees forward: the spine retains its S-curve, the intervertebral discs are loaded evenly and the back muscles relax into an active but not fatiguing posture. This is the physiological principle behind the saddle stool.

Balance mechanism: static versus dynamic sitting

Static sitting, even in an ergonomically sound posture, leads to muscle fatigue and pressure build-up in the intervertebral discs over time. The Score Balance mechanism allows the seat to move subtly in all directions with the body's centre of gravity. This generates constant small corrective movements (micro-movement) that keep the small spinal stabilisers active, improve circulation and delay the onset of fatigue.

Seamlessly upholstered: hygiene as a selection criterion

In laboratories, cleanrooms and medical environments, chair upholstery is a critical hygiene point. Standard fabric upholstery has seams and texture structures that trap bacteria, aerosols and fluids. Score seamlessly upholstered saddle stools use PUxx material without seams, stitching lines or openings. This surface can be cleaned with 70% alcohol, chlorine and hydrogen peroxide, meets EN 1021 fire resistance requirements and has no openings where microbiological contamination can harbour.

Working height and chair adjustment: the right sequence

A common mistake in ergonomic setup is adjusting the chair to the table rather than the other way around. The correct sequence is: set the chair to the right seated height for your body height (shoulders relaxed, upper arms vertical, elbows at working height), then adjust the table height to match. For a saddle stool, set the height so you are sitting as high as possible with both feet flat on the floor, with the hips slightly above the knees. The open hip angle will then be present naturally.

Six questions for the right ergonomic workspace setup

Answer these six questions and you will immediately know which type of seating and workspace solution best fits your specific laboratory or healthcare environment.

1

What is the nature of the work?

Forward-leaning work at a workbench, microscope or patient side: saddle stool (open hip angle, active working posture). Prolonged desk work at a screen: ergonomic office chair with armrests and lumbar support. Alternating between workbench and desk: Spirit work chair or hybrid Spirit Amazone. Blood collection and medical procedures: Vena phlebotomy chair.

2

Is dynamic sitting a requirement?

Staff who sit for long uninterrupted periods and want to prevent or already have back complaints: choose a Score saddle stool with Balance mechanism. The subtle micro-movement keeps the stabilisers active and reduces muscle fatigue. For non-critical seating tasks, a basic Amazone or Jumper is sufficient.

3

Does the environment impose hygiene requirements?

Cleanroom, GMP laboratory, operating theatre or medical setting: choose seamlessly upholstered Score saddle stools in PUxx. For input devices: Athena IP68 keyboards and panel PCs resistant to alcohol and chlorine. In standard laboratories, regular Stamskin upholstery with moisture resistance is sufficient.

4

Is ESD protection required?

Electronically sensitive production, ESD zones and semiconductor laboratories: choose Score ESD saddle stools or ESD work chairs with conductive upholstery and conductive base. Ask your adviser about the available ESD variants and the corresponding inspection reports.

5

Is the workstation mobile or flexible?

Data entry at the bedside, at the patient's side or across multiple workstations: choose an Ergotron computer or laptop cart. Fixed workstation with multiple screens: Ergotron monitor arms free up desk space and position screens at the exact ergonomic height. Sit-stand desk: choose Ergotron LX tall pole for the widest height range.

6

Amazone or Jumper: narrow or wide seat?

The best way to choose is a trial placement. As a general guide: the Amazone suits women and smaller users who prefer legs closer together; the Jumper suits users who prefer a wider base. Both deliver exactly the same open hip angle and ergonomic benefits. Request a trial placement with your Poly Temp adviser.

Standards and regulations

Standards for ergonomic workplace setup

Ergonomic workplace setup is governed in the Netherlands by the Working Conditions Act (Arbowet) and the associated RI&E obligation (risk inventory and evaluation). Employers are required to identify and manage risks arising from unfavourable ergonomic conditions. International standards define the technical specifications for seating and input devices.

Working Conditions Act

Employer obligation for ergonomic workplace setup

The Dutch Working Conditions Act requires employers to organise working conditions so that physical strain from unfavourable posture, force exertion or repetitive movements is prevented or limited. Ergonomic seating and workspace setup falls directly under this obligation. A demonstrable policy on ergonomic workplace setup can limit liability exposure in the event of sick leave arising from back complaints.

NEN-EN 1335

Standard for office chairs and work chairs

NEN-EN 1335 specifies the dimensions, adjustability requirements and safety requirements for office chairs. Score Ergo office chairs comply with NEN-EN 1335. The standard prescribes minimum adjustment ranges for seat height, backrest and seat depth to ensure the chair is suited to the full range of users in the workforce.

IEC 60601

Medical electrical equipment standard

Ergotron's medical computer carts and the Athena panel PC are designed and certified in accordance with IEC 60601-1, the international safety standard for medical electrical equipment. This certification is required for use in direct patient environments and clinical settings. Athena keyboards meet IP68 waterproofing (fully submersible).

EN 1021

Fire resistance of upholstery

Score seamlessly upholstered saddle stools with PUxx covering comply with EN 1021-1 (cigarette) and EN 1021-2 (match) fire resistance requirements for furniture. This is a requirement for seating in hospitals, care institutions and laboratories that fall under fire safety regulations for public buildings.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about ergonomic workspace setup

Answers to the most common questions about saddle stools, ergonomic chairs and workspace solutions for laboratories and medical environments.

What is the benefit of a saddle stool over a standard work chair?

On a saddle stool, the pelvis tilts 15 to 20 degrees forward, allowing the spine to maintain its natural S-curve. On a standard chair with a 90-degree knee angle, the pelvis tilts backwards, the lumbar lordosis flattens and pressure on the intervertebral discs increases unevenly. This is the most common cause of lower back complaints from prolonged sitting. A saddle stool is not a cure for existing back problems, but is scientifically supported as a preventive measure against back complaints during sedentary work.

What is the difference between the Score Amazone and the Jumper?

The only difference is the width of the seat. The Amazone has a narrower seat, keeping the legs closer together; the Jumper has a wider seat, with the legs slightly further apart. Both deliver exactly the same open hip angle, the same lumbar support and the same ergonomic benefit. The choice is purely a matter of personal preference and body type. A trial placement is the most reliable way to make the right choice.

What is the Score Balance mechanism?

The Balance mechanism is an additional mechanism under the seat that allows the saddle seat to move subtly in all directions with the body's centre of gravity. When you lean slightly to the left, the seat moves gently with you. This generates constant small corrective movements in the trunk and back muscles (micro-movement), keeping them active, improving circulation and delaying fatigue compared to static sitting. The Balance mechanism's resistance is adjustable so it can be tailored to the individual user.

What does seamlessly upholstered mean and when do I need it?

Seamlessly upholstered Score saddle stools use PUxx material without seams, stitching lines or textured surfaces. This covering can be cleaned with 70% alcohol, chlorine solutions and hydrogen peroxide without damage or discolouration. Seamlessly upholstered versions are required in cleanrooms (no particle shedding from seams), surgical and medical environments (disinfection after each patient), diagnostic laboratories with BSL classification and any environment where standard fabric upholstery is hygienically unacceptable.

Are Score saddle stools also suitable for cleanrooms and ESD environments?

Yes. Score supplies saddle stools in specific cleanroom configurations with seamless PUxx upholstery and optional HEPA filter in the base to minimise particle shedding. For ESD-safe environments, Score supplies models with conductive upholstery and a conductive base that comply with ESD standards. Contact our adviser for the available ESD and cleanroom variants and the corresponding technical specifications.

How do I set up a saddle stool correctly?

Set the saddle stool to its lowest position. Sit with both feet flat on the floor. Raise the seat until you feel pressure on the inside of the thighs. Lower the seat slightly until that pressure disappears: this is the correct height. Your hips will now be slightly higher than your knees, your legs will be in an open angle and your feet will be flat on the floor. Then adjust the table or workbench height to match your elbow height in a relaxed position. The working height of your table is variable; the saddle stool has a fixed optimum height for each person.

What is the difference between the Score Spirit 1500, 1501 and 1502?

The Spirit 1500 is the base work chair without armrests: compact and suited for workbench heights. The Spirit 1501 adds adjustable armrests for support during screen work and combined workbench-desk tasks. The Spirit 1502 adds an adjustable lumbar support to the Spirit 1500 for users who require lower back support during prolonged workbench work. The Spirit Amazone combines the Spirit work chair frame with the Amazone saddle seat for users who want the saddle experience with a backrest.

What are Ergotron computer carts used for in a laboratory?

Ergotron computer carts enable healthcare workers and laboratory staff to take their computer and display to wherever they are working, rather than returning to a fixed workstation. In diagnostic laboratories, carts are used for data entry beside an analyser, barcode registration at the sample rack and reporting at the workbench. In hospitals they are most commonly used at nursing stations for medication recording, patient history at the bedside and administrative tasks. All medical Ergotron carts are IEC 60601 certified for use in direct patient environments.

What is IP68 and why is it relevant for keyboards in a laboratory?

IP68 is the highest dust and water resistance rating: the device is completely dust-tight and resistant to immersion in water at depth greater than 1 metre for more than 30 minutes. In laboratories this means the keyboard can be cleaned immediately after spillage of liquids, media or buffers with running water or a disinfectant wipe. The seamless silicone surface of Athena keyboards has no openings or seams where liquids can penetrate, preventing bacteriological contamination of the device.

Can we arrange a trial placement for our department?

Yes. Poly Temp Scientific offers on-site trial placements of Score saddle stools and work chairs for laboratories, hospitals and other healthcare institutions in the Netherlands. A trial placement gives staff the opportunity to try the Score Amazone, Jumper and Balance variants at their own workstation before making an informed collective choice. Contact our advisers to schedule a trial placement for your department.
